Can You Check the Cat?
Running late from work, can you check the cat? Strange request but ok
A text message asks someone to check the cat, followed by footage of an orange-and-white cat intensely watching a chessboard while a hand moves the pieces. The joke is that “checking the cat” unexpectedly means finding it deep in a serious chess game. Patrick Watson’s gentle, melancholic song “Je Te Laisserai Des Mots” makes the absurd scene feel dramatic and emotionally profound.
