Smart Home Email Handoff
LPT: email address for my home paid off. You should do it too Years ago, I set up the email [my home address]@gmail.com. I always had a grand scheme of making my house a smart home, with hub, hue lighting, and a bunch of other cool things. I also knew I wouldn't be there forever and that a selling feature of the house would be the smart stuff. I didn't want myself or the new owners to go through the hassle of re-registering things. Whelp, today I just gave over control of said email address to my old home and have already created an address for my new home. The new owners were very happy with the easy transfer and I'm happy I had the foresight. All my smart home stuff and automation are all self-hosted. I plan to die of old age in this house, and I hope whoever lives here after me likes debian and being frustrated.
A Reddit-style post explains how someone created a Gmail address for their house to manage smart-home devices and transferred it to the new owners when moving. The punchline is that the commenter’s self-hosted automation is so frustrating that they expect to die in the house, joking that the next resident must enjoy Debian and troubleshooting. It is used as a reaction to elaborate DIY technology projects, overengineering, or systems that are difficult to maintain.
