The Flashed Face Distortion Effect: Grotesque faces from relative spaces Jason M Tangen Sean C Murphy Matthew B Thompson PERCEPTION www.perceptionweb.com

What it means

A 54-second audiovisual demonstration shows pairs of women’s faces staring forward while the rapidly changing sequence makes their features appear increasingly distorted and grotesque, especially when attention is focused on the central fixation cross. The final title card identifies the phenomenon as the Flashed Face Distortion Effect and credits its creators. Eerie, understated music gives the scientific demonstration an unsettling, uncanny mood, turning a perception experiment into a creepy reaction-style clip.
