I Pay for Encouragement
I just fired my mentor. She told me that I do not have any computer knowledge base and should not do machine learning. I did take data structures and coded at work by modifying the code I found on the Internet. So yes she is right about me not being a strong coder. It takes me 2-3 hours to solve a Leetcode puzzle independently without the Internet. Sometimes it takes me 2 days - depending on the puzzle - this is why I hired her to help me learn. But I don’t pay her to discourage me from doing machine learning. I hear discouragement often and keep pushing through. She also said that she wasn’t doing it for money. Well, she asked for payment though upfront for multiple weeks. Ha! Back to Leetcode, feeling better, let’s see how it will go. I don’t pay for discouragement. I pay for encouragement. Discouragement I get for free.
A social media post describes someone firing a machine-learning mentor because the mentor discouraged them, while admitting they are a weak coder who relies on Internet code and struggles with LeetCode. The punchline is that discouragement is already available for free, so the person claims to pay only for encouragement—a self-deprecating joke about confidence, learning, and paying for validation.
