Explaining Monads to Parents
You know that thing where you're playing Scrabble (actually Upwords in this case) with your parents and you play a word you really really don't want to have to explain to them? I just played "MONAD". Dad did indeed ask me the "What's a monad?" but I chickened out and went with the Leibniz definition rather than treating it as a perfect opportunity to say "It's a monoid in the category of endofunctors".
A screenshot of a humorous tweet about playing Upwords with one's parents and placing the word “MONAD.” When the father asks what a monad is, the speaker avoids the technical joke about monoids and endofunctors and gives the Leibniz definition instead. It is shared as a reaction to awkwardly explaining programming or mathematics to nontechnical relatives.
