Saddest Winter in the 2000s

Text on the meme

Saddest winter in the 2000s Happiest winter in the 2020s

What it means

The clip contrasts a snowy yellow school bus and a bright, crowded shopping mall filled with Christmas trees, labelled “Saddest winter in the 2000s,” with rain-soaked, foggy woods, a cemetery, an old church, and an empty parking lot labelled “Happiest winter in the 2020s.” Frank Sinatra’s gentle, nostalgic Christmas standard “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” plays over it, including “The troubles will be miles away.” The joke is bitter irony: even the supposedly sad 2000s winter looks warm and festive compared with the bleak, isolating present-day scenes; it works as a nostalgic reaction to modern life or ruined holiday mood.
