PCs Were Always a Privilege
Sad truth is PCs have always been a privilege. The mid '90s to mid '20s were a golden age for open tech and the internet, but that was all at the behest of hardware producers. They always had the ability to restrict or take it away. Not even Linux can save us from this. The idea of the "personal computer" that one person owns at home will vanish over the next 10 years. Only hardcore enthusiasts with deep pockets will own one.
A screenshot of an X post argues that personal computers have always been a privilege controlled by hardware manufacturers. A quoted post predicts that ordinary people will stop owning PCs within ten years, leaving them only to wealthy hardcore enthusiasts; the joke is a bleak, exaggerated reaction to the decline of open technology and rising hardware costs.
