Araki Hirohiko Pronunciation Joke
ARAKI HIROHIKO In Europe, like in France and Italy, they don’t seem to really pronounce the letter “H”. So they won’t pronounce the name ‘Hirohiko’ as you would in Japanese, ‘Hee-row-bee-koh.’ They’ll say it as ‘Ee-row-ee-koh’ or else ‘Eh-row-ee-koh.’ Uh, ‘Eroiko’ (Erotic young man)? ‘Eroiko Araki’. Well, I guess that’s fine. I’m satisfied. Er... actually I think it’s kind of cool.
A portrait of Japanese manga artist Hirohiko Araki appears above a caption explaining how Europeans may omit the “H” sound when pronouncing his name. The altered pronunciation turns “Hirohiko Araki” into the suggestive-sounding “Eroiko Araki,” and the speaker humorously decides that this is actually cool. It is used as a reaction to funny mispronunciations, accidental innuendo, or unexpectedly amusing wordplay.
