Brazilian Age Verification Law
The Chamber of Deputies approved Bill 2628/22, which is now moving to the Senate for voting. If approved, virtually all online services will only be accessible from Brazil if you prove you are not a minor through a photo, submission of a document (e.g., ID card, driver’s license), bank transaction, or a similar mechanism. Social networks, email services, instant messaging services, online games—basically anything that requires a login and password and could potentially be used by children or teenagers—will require users to provide personal information proving they are adults. If the software, app, service, or game manufacturer you use does not implement the age verification mechanism for Brazilians, it will be blocked nationwide from the Brazilian internet by Anatel, including orders to block free DNS services such as 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1, and similar ones. In practice, only highly popular products from large companies like Google and Meta will have these resources, as they involve costs and the development of new functionalities. All others will potentially be banned from Brazil for not being safe for children and teenagers.
A screenshot of a social media post explains a proposed Brazilian law requiring online services to verify users’ ages through photos, documents, bank transactions, or similar methods. The joke is the absurdly broad scope: nearly every service requiring a login could demand proof of adulthood or be blocked, making it useful as a reaction to intrusive age verification and internet regulation.
