Are Ya Winning, Son?

ARE YA WINNING, SON? Yes, yes! I am winning! I have everything at my fingertips, science, the arts, love, philosophy, online... all a swipe of a card or the click of a button away! I have everything, but something is horribly wrong, everything is dust, I ache to be free, I yearn for the unreachable, the true human experience, the passion of relations, but it's all gone, a commodity, something to be sold in clean shrink-wrapped packages. We won, Dr. Work. Everything used, everything discarded, everything consumed and discarded through my body and slowly, my spirit. We won. And maybe that's why we have lost so much.

A stick-figure father asks his son, “Are ya winning, son?” while the son reclines amid online shopping packages, a computer, and an enormous pile of discarded clothes and goods. The son claims to have everything instantly available, but laments that consumerism has turned love, art, and human experience into commodities, making the joke a bleak critique of modern convenience and materialism. The video is accompanied by The Mamas & The Papas performing “California Dreamin’,” whose wistful 1960s folk-pop mood makes the scene feel nostalgic, melancholic, and ironically tragic.
