Every 3D Printer Has a Fingerprint
Researchers discover that every 3D printer leaves a unique "fingerprint" on prints, and they can be tracked back pretty accurately SUMMARY 3D prints have unique "fingerprints" that allow the identification of individual machines, even those of the same model. University of Illinois researchers, led by Bill King, created an AI system that can identify machine prints with 98% accuracy. There's the potential to trace poor quality products back to the machine that printed them, improving larger-scale manufacturing processes.
A screenshot of an XDA Developers article shows a colorful 3D-printed bird emerging from a Creality CFS printer, alongside a headline about every 3D printer leaving a unique fingerprint on its prints. The joke comes from the unusually elaborate bird print being presented as evidence in a serious-sounding technology news story, making it useful as an absurd reaction to traceability or uniquely identifiable creations.
