4chan Server Maintenance Update
Quick Progress Update Just wanted to give you guys a quick update on progress. 4chan is coming back; the main thing that's taking us so long is people in different time zones who need to coordinate not having overlapping free time. Here's what we've done so far: Secure tripcode salt changed /f/ is sadly no more All passwords reset Two servers retired (Dells from 2010 that boot bought second hand before he left) Temporarily disabled PDFs (they'll be back) Up-to-date operating systems There's still more work to do, and there will probably be sporadic down time once things are back up and running. Right now we're aiming for maybe a read-only state on Sunday night or Monday morning so we can do some admin stuff in the background (i.e., changing people's logins, passwords, and short of stuff). Then once all the housekeeping is complete we can go live again. There's bound to be snags, but we miss 4chan just as much as you and we're going to do everything we can to bring the site back ASAP. --GrapeApe
An email-style screenshot titled “Quick Progress Update” announces that 4chan is coming back online. It lists absurdly mundane maintenance tasks, including retiring two old Dell servers and disabling PDFs, making the site’s global importance and chaotic infrastructure the joke. People send it as a reaction to mock serious corporate outage updates or describe an internet community held together by ancient hardware.
