A Genius Admires Simplicity
A GENIUS ADMIRES SIMPLICITY C code is not complicated—it is a close to the metal language, data is primitive types and stored in registers or memory. Rust code resembles instead the Java enterprise style of “everything is an object” and inheritance hierarchies too complicated for knowledge by one person. Code is simple in C, 10x more complex in C++, 1000x more complex in Rust. Types consist of unreachable levels of punctuation, method names have “::” within and lifetimes not valid in any other language, highlighters have no luck with parsing these. Making things more confusing these are done with single quotes like characters—worse, those are also in the language. It is almost intentional to seem like something more intellectual than what it is. The “borrow checker” of Rust actually is an affine type system. How it works is extending lifetimes of allocated objects—a process known in theory as “weakening.” Researchers in the 1980s have concluded affine typing systems are a dead end owed to the exponential time complexity of the typing algorithm when weakening is used. Hence the famous infinite compile times. Even small programs can take hours to build. In fact projects as large as the Linux kernel compilation time is completely intractable. Academia favors linear types which do not have this problem. The Rust community are primarily not even academics—but hobbyists. They deliver in their ignorance a type system of inferior standard of quality. Using dependencies multiplies the workload of code reviewers. Perl has been rejected from major distros because of its CPAN culture, every tool downloading hundreds of dependencies from the internet. To stand by Rust makes Perl look well—and not only in syntax. An average Rust program is tens of MB compiled. Its build script consumes over 100 times that for countless microdependencies. Any program uses multiple copies of the same library because the build script does not de-duplicate. To review these libraries for a security audit is humanly impossible. In response to packagers pleading for years with Rust program authors to reverse the course of this madness—the Rust response is escalation. Debian now finally give up and remove Rust software as unmaintainable. Rust users begin SWATting developers who defend this move. René Rebe has been already arrested on camera only half hour after downtalking Rust.
A dark-background text meme titled “A GENIUS ADMIRES SIMPLICITY” presents an intentionally overcomplicated rant arguing that Rust is vastly more complex and impractical than C, while also attacking its type system, borrow checker, dependencies, compilation times, and community. The joke is that the supposedly simple explanation is an absurdly long, technically styled polemic full of exaggerated claims, parodying anti-Rust criticism and programming-language tribalism.
