Sony BMG Rootkit Uninstaller

Sony BMG initially denied that the rootkits were harmful. It then released an uninstaller for one of the programs that merely made the programs files invisible while also installing additional software that could not be easily removed, collected an email address from the user and introduced further security vulnerabilities.

A text-based meme recounts how Sony BMG responded to criticism of its harmful DRM rootkits by releasing an “uninstaller” that hid the files, installed more software, collected users’ email addresses, and created additional security vulnerabilities. The joke is the absurdly self-defeating solution: the supposed fix made the security and privacy problem even worse, making it a reaction to corporate incompetence and bad cybersecurity decisions.
