The PC Becomes a Console
It's the same thing when we're talking about why we can't support Linux. The distributions have become bespoke and so freely customizable, we have no real viable way to attest to the security of its kernel. The whole operating system itself could be the cheat. (2/4) There's a potential future where we don't need things like an anti-cheat driver, but that future would also have your PC being something closer to a gaming console environment—you'd have no access to the hardware or software as an end- user. (3/4) So, we're stuck in this middle ground where, you COULD mess with your operating system, but we have to make ourselves responsible for knowing about it (and not letting you play when you do). It's a massive tradeoff, but a necessary one for competitive PC gaming today. (4/4)
A three-panel screenshot of tweets by Riot’s Head of Anti-Cheat discusses Linux, customizable operating systems, anti-cheat drivers, and the possibility of PCs becoming more like locked-down gaming consoles. The joke is the implication that anti-cheat systems and competitive gaming may require sacrificing user control over PC hardware and software, matching the uploader’s criticism of Riot’s platform ambitions.
