Tolkien Birthday Permission Thread

Text on the meme

Happy 130th birthday to the legend that started it all J.R.R. Tolkien! 🎉 Do you have permission to use that image? Why do they need permission to pay tribute to a historical and beloved person? I found this picture on several sites. Was it supposed to be kept as a secret?

What it means

A dark-mode social media thread celebrates J.R.R. Tolkien’s 130th birthday with a photograph of the author. The Tolkien Society asks whether permission was obtained to use the image, prompting a sarcastic reply questioning why a tribute to a beloved historical figure would require secrecy. It is used as a reaction to excessive copyright or permission policing. EN: A dark-mode social media thread celebrates J.R.R. Tolkien’s 130th birthday with a photograph of the author.
