Software Written by Twenty People
Twitter could be run by 50 people. Everyone serious in the software industry knows this. The issue is insecure people not wanting to admit it, as a lot of people would be out of jobs. The software we use could be so good. Imagine software written by 20 people who deeply care instead of trash written by thousands mostly there for a paycheck. Look at art. Great art is produced by individuals and small groups. No great art has ever been produced by large groups there for a paycheck. Why should software be any different?
George Hotz argues in a LinkedIn post that Twitter and other software could be built by far fewer, more dedicated people instead of large teams motivated mainly by paychecks. The joke is a provocative exaggeration contrasting passionate individual creators with bloated software organizations, inviting reactions from programmers who dislike corporate development culture.
