POV : IRL Matchmaking
A man sits at a chessboard in the middle of a pedestrian shopping street, waiting as passersby walk past. He briefly interacts with the chess pieces and places a takeaway cup on the board, but nobody stops to play, before another person finally approaches. The joke compares real-life dating or matchmaking to matchmaking in an online game: endless searching, awkward waiting, and mostly missed connections. Sylvie Vartan’s French chanson-pop song “La Maritza” adds a melodramatic, wistful mood that makes the mundane failure feel theatrically tragic.
