Reading Lolita in Public
wanting to read my book in public but it's Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov so I have to do this every time to show people I'm on the level
A long-haired man sits outdoors reading Vladimir Nabokov’s novel “Lolita” while giving a thumbs-down gesture. The joke is that he wants to read the book in public but must signal that he disapproves of its controversial subject matter so strangers do not misunderstand him. It is used as a reaction to enjoying something socially awkward, controversial, or easily misinterpreted.
