Magritte’s Glass Key Looks Like a Rock
Rene Magritte: The Glass Key (1959) Being a very poor painter, Magritte's works seldom resembled what he attempted them to. This attempt at a glass key ended up looking like a rock in a mountain landscape. Other mispainted works included his attempt at a self portrait, which looked like a slice of ham with an eyeball; his painting "Heartstrings" which resembled a cloud in a glass; and perhaps his most famous failure, "This is Not a Pipe," which sadly very clearly showed a pipe.
A surreal mountain landscape shows a giant rock floating between the peaks, presented as René Magritte’s supposed painting of a glass key. The joke parodies Magritte’s surrealist art and the famous work “The Treachery of Images,” pretending that his paintings humorously failed to resemble their subjects. It is sent as an absurd reaction to something being completely unlike what it was meant to be.
