The Mystery of the Rifling
Make: Colt Model: 609 ~ XM177E1 Worker performed: #73 had muzzle exit damage, bleed and crop. Removed barrel. Barrel is same supp. Barrel has been modified by unknown means, presume connected with bleed marks at exit. Barrel has no rifling. Fitting has been removed. This is a smooth bore barrel. I ran a marble down it and it didn't make a sound. Trigger rifle has been in shop for 8 months. Some time between 17/03/03 (last service) and inspection, someone has removed the rifling from this barrel without access to any tools, or shop ispected and modified without recording work. THERE IS DISCHARGE IN THE GROOVES. THIS HAS BEEN FIRED. THIS WEAPON IS REG ACTIVE. IT HAS BEEN FIRED IN COMBAT POST MODIFICATION. FIND THE GUY WHO DID THIS I NEED TO KNOW WHY. No further work scheduled until I get to talk to the man who did this. Equipment received with repair job: SC • SL • CA • LC • MAG • OTHER Comments/condition on arrival: Received in a bag which still weighed 5lbs after all parts removed because it was so full of dirt. FOUND LIVE AMMO IN BAG.
A Colt XM177E1 rifle is documented on a repair form after arriving with its rifling mysteriously removed, leaving it as a smoothbore weapon. The increasingly alarmed technician notes evidence that it was fired in combat after the modification and demands to speak with whoever did it, creating an absurd military-maintenance mystery.
