Toxic Sapphic Flag Geometry
WHY DOES THE SAPPHIC FLAG HAVE A DIAGRAM OF A PENTAGONAL PLANAR MOLECULE? THERE ARE ONLY TWO IONS WITH THAT GEOMETRY, AND THEY ARE BOTH TOXIC
A pink-and-white sapphic flag contains a stylized five-petaled flower resembling a pentagonal planar molecule. The punchline refers to the two ions commonly associated with that geometry, both of which are toxic, turning the flag’s design into a chemistry joke.
