Rupert Hails the Bus
Found a 50 year old Rupert the Bear annual on the charity bookshelf at Barrow-in-Furness railway station. Steady on, Rupert. “Thanks,” smiles the little bear, “I will!” He hails the bus to Pusseyville.
A vintage Rupert the Bear illustration shows the little bear standing by a country road, waving to an approaching bus. The joke comes from the caption treating Rupert’s cheerful bus-hailing as an oddly dramatic response to finding an old book, with “Steady on, Rupert” adding mock concern and British humor. It is used as a whimsical reaction to someone enthusiastically committing to an ordinary or unexpected plan.
