Walking to Mordor from California

How should I prepare to walk to Mordor? I was inspired to plan a route from my front door to Mt Whitney in California and I wanted it to be the same distance that Frodo and Sam journeyed in LOTR. The thing is while I do have some experience in hiking and camping, I haven’t traveled very far on foot in years and this journey is very daunting.
