You Never Outgrow ADHD
How do people "outgrow" their ADHD? My cousin tells everyone that he ‘outgrew’ his ADHD and this apparently has been confirmed by his doctor. In actuality, his wife has picked up 90% of his executive functioning, he has flexible working hours as an IT specialist and can work from home, and has a pretty strict routine. Essentially his life has been set up for him by his wife and his symptoms have been minimised because of this. Definitely not ‘outgrown’!
A Reddit-style text post asks how people supposedly “outgrow” ADHD. The response explains that the cousin has not actually outgrown it; his wife manages most of his executive functioning, while flexible work, working from home, and a strict routine hide or reduce the impact of his symptoms. The joke is a sarcastic critique of mistaking accommodations and support for recovery, useful as a reaction to someone claiming ADHD disappears with age.
