A looping video places a purple-haired anime-style character inside the overlapping center of a Venn diagram labeled “Weimar Germany,” “1990's Yugoslavia,” “Fall of the Roman Empire,” “Ethnic Conflict,” “Rampant Degeneracy,” and “Political Collapse.” The punchline is that the viewer is supposedly living at the intersection of every historical disaster and social collapse at once. Paramore’s upbeat yet melancholy synth-pop song “Hard Times” plays over the clip, making the absurdly bleak joke funnier through ironic contrast and a catchy, cheerful mood.
