Oops, our license has changed! What happened to my game? As many of you know, the Unity Engine is in fact two substantial software components — the Unity Editor and the Unity Runtime. The Unity Runtime is code that executes on player devices and makes Made with Unity games work at scale, with billions of monthly downloads. We are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that is based upon each time a qualifying game is downloaded by an end user. We chose this because each time a game is downloaded, the Unity Runtime is also installed. Also we believe that an initial install-based fee allows creators to keep the ongoing financial gains from player engagement, unlike a revenue share. Is my game safe? Absolutely -- as long as your company isn't making more than $200k on your game, or as long as basically nobody has your game installed -- and neither of those ever happens. Of course, this change is retroactive, so if you can't afford to pay a bulk sum, we'll force you to remove your game from the public marketplace, crippling your company, and ensuring sufficient damage to public trust that you'll no longer be able to publish new content, no matter the engine you choose. Then again, if piracy is an issue with your game, you might be out some additional costs. Your game is playable until: 2023-12-31 11:59:59 Time Left 02:23:57:37 Your studio will close on: 2024-03-31 11:59:59 Time Left 05:23:57:37 About bitcoin How to buy bitcoins? bitcoin ACCEPTED HERE Send $0.20 per user installation to: payments@unity.com, c/o John Riccitiello Copy
What it means

A fake warning page announces that Unity has changed its licensing terms and charges developers for every game installation. The countdowns imply that the developer’s game and studio are about to expire, while the Bitcoin payment panel heightens the absurdity. It parodies backlash to Unity’s proposed Runtime Fee and is shared as a sarcastic reaction to exploitative game-engine monetization.
