"The cashier who was nice to you as part of her job has a boyfriend"
Karl Rove leans over to whisper to George W. Bush at an event. The joke is that ordinary professional friendliness is misread as romantic interest, only to be crushed by the revelation that the cashier already has a boyfriend; it is used as a reaction to exaggerated hope followed by disappointment.
