An animated chessboard demonstrates a Queen’s Gambit trap: White captures a pawn with a rook, Black’s king unexpectedly takes the rook, and White’s attempted bishop and queen attacks lead to a losing blunder and checkmate. Here's a common trap to look out for when playing as White. When beginning with the Queen's Gambit, Black will sometimes respond E5. Many players here will take the bait and capture the pawn with their rooks, as this seemingly wins material and pins the G7 pawn to Black's dark square rook. But in this position, Black has a brilliant move by playing King takes on E5. White can now try to boot the Black King by advancing his bishop to D3, but Black can simply move his King to the side, and now comes a game losing blunder for White with Queen to C4. Although Black's King is now threatened, it also has a track straight to the other side of the board, immediately winning the game for black.
