Bank Password Security

One bank I use emails me monthly statements. They come as PDFs. Password-protected PDFs. The password is this: To view your e-Statement: > Click on the attachment in this mail > You will be prompted for your 8 digit password > Your Password is: The first 4 characters of your name in capital letters, followed by 4 digits of your date and month of birth (DDMM) Spaces and dots are not part of your password Example: > A Mustafa (Date of Birth: 01-02-1980): password to be entered as AMUS0102 > Rishi Rakesh (Date of Birth: 22-10-1954): password to be entered as RISH2210 Having trouble viewing your e-Statement Click here

A social media post shares a bank’s password instructions for monthly PDF statements. The password is constructed from the first four letters of the customer’s name and their birth date, making the supposedly protected document extremely easy to guess and highlighting poor banking security. It is shared as an ironic reaction to weak privacy practices and absurdly predictable passwords.
