Divine Comedy Doesn't Look Funny
Doesn't look very funny Divine Comedy, 1867, by Gustave Doré
A dark Gustave Doré engraving from the Divine Comedy shows a grotesque spider-like damned figure crawling in the foreground while robed figures stand and sit behind it. The joke contrasts the serious caption with the bizarre, horrifying image, suggesting that this is what the Divine Comedy actually looks like when taken literally. It is used as an absurd reaction to something that is supposedly funny but clearly is not.
