Sad Squirrel Watches the Red Squirrel Decline
1945 2010 RED SQUIRREL GREY SQUIRREL BOTH NONE
A mournful cartoon squirrel appears beneath maps comparing the distribution of red and grey squirrels in 1945 and 2010. The maps suggest that red squirrels have dramatically declined while grey squirrels have spread, leaving the squirrel looking devastated. The joke is a grim ecological reaction meme about invasive species and environmental change, made even more melodramatic by Coldplay’s orchestral pop song “Viva La Vida” playing underneath.
