Coraline Meets the Chernobyl Liquidators

Soviet military badge (left) and medal awarded to liquidators. Chernobyl liquidators were the civil and military personnel who were called upon to deal with the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union on the site of the event. The liquidators are widely credited with limiting both the immediate and long-term damage from the disaster.

The clip begins with Coraline Jones speaking, then cuts to a strange long-nosed animated character before showing a person in protective gear, Soviet badges, and an explanation of Chernobyl liquidators. The absurd montage turns the mysterious character’s introduction into a dramatic, pseudo-historical Chernobyl reference, made funnier by the dark, ominous atmosphere of MGMT’s “Little Dark Age”.
