Pack It In, Pack It Out
Dispose of trash properly. PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT Inspect your camp and rest areas for spilled foods. Pack trash, leftover food and litter. Deposit solid human waste in catholes 8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, camp and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished. Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products. To wash yourself or dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater.
A wilderness-safety sign shows hikers carrying their belongings into a campsite and a camper packing waste out in a bag. The joke is the memorable “pack it in, pack it out” rule: anything brought into nature, especially trash, must be taken away afterward. It is commonly shared as a reaction to littering or to emphasize cleaning up after yourself.
