Good Night Is Not From God
I was genuinely asking the question because the only thing I find on the internet is that it is basically a slur from the original...I assumed there was a better explanation for it than that as it seems a little unlikely given the good night, good morning etc haven’t been slurred into something else too. Sorry if you saw that as offensive. It is not related to ‘good night/day/morning.’ The ‘good’ in those do not come from ‘God.’ goodbye Word History Phrases Contai Word History Etymology alteration of God be with you First Known Use 1575, in the meaning defined at sense 1 Time Traveler
A screenshot of a social media exchange shows someone asking whether “goodbye” comes from “God,” followed by Merriam-Webster clarifying that “good” in good night, good day, and good morning does not come from “God.” The punchline is the overly elaborate misunderstanding and the dictionary screenshot proving the etymology of “goodbye.” It is shared as a reaction to pedantic corrections, accidental misunderstandings, or bizarre language questions.
