Many Rational Numbers, Much Real Numbers
ENGLISH IS DIFFICULT. WHEN DO WE USE "MANY" AND WHEN DO WE USE "MUCH"? "MANY" IS FOR NOUNS THAT ARE COUNTABLE, LIKE APPLES. "MUCH" IS FOR NOUNS THAT ARE NOT COUNTABLE, LIKE WATER. SO WE SHOULD SAY "MANY RATIONAL NUMBERS" AND "MUCH REAL NUMBERS"?
A four-panel comic uses colorful snails to explain the difference between “many” for countable nouns and “much” for uncountable nouns. The joke applies this rule incorrectly to mathematical terms, treating rational numbers as countable and real numbers as uncountable, even though both sets are infinite and the phrasing is grammatically awkward. It is shared as a nerdy math joke about English grammar and number theory.
