GitHub Copilot Copies Licensed Code
Explored github copilot,a paid service, to see if it encodes code from repositories w/ restrictive licenses. I checked if it had code I had written at my previous employer that has a license allowing its use only for free games and requiring attaching the license. yeah it does The 3 lines it suggested are right out of the source engine SDK verbatim "Funny" how they chose to train their paid service on other copyrighted code they don't own, instead of all the code they do own.
A Twitter screenshot shows a programmer testing GitHub Copilot against code from a previous employer and finding that it reproduces three lines verbatim from the Source Engine SDK. The joke is an accusation that the paid AI coding service trained on copyrighted code it did not own, making the result feel like blatant copying rather than coincidental similarity.
