Viatical Settlements Passive Income
Interesting, lesser known passive income: Viatical settlements. You buy a stranger's life insurance policy and get paid when they pass away. My Experience This passive income method actually shocked me when I first heard it. It almost felt wrong. But it's legal, it's a multibillion-dollar market, and turns out to be a win-win for all parties. There's basically a marketplace where you can buy people's life insurance policies for less (often much less) than the total payout value. The amount you pay is based on their remaining life expectancy, the payout amount, and the monthly premiums. I was first introduced to this investment type by a friend of mine a few years ago. He had bought a policy for $90k from an older person that was ill. That person ended up passing away sooner than expected and that meant my friend ended up getting a lump sum payment of $260k - a huge return on his investment in a little over a year. I honestly felt put off by the idea at first - it seemed wrong to invest into another human’s death. But after thinking about it more, the person actually wants you to buy it - to spend and enjoy their life while they still can. Going on that trip, buying nice gifts for the people they love, etc. The buyer takes on the risk for a hopeful decent return. And it's done through brokers so there are no personal feelings or attachments involved and everything is done legally and properly. A lot of life insurance policies actually just expire due to unpaid premiums - or the insurance company offers to buy it back for pennies on the dollar. That's why this is actually a win-win for everyone.
A darkly humorous Reddit-style screenshot presents viatical settlements as a little-known passive-income investment. The poster explains buying an ill person’s life-insurance policy at a discount and receiving the payout after their death, framing the arrangement as a legal win-win despite the uncomfortable idea of profiting from someone’s death. It is used as a reaction to absurd, morbid, or ethically questionable financial advice.
