1890s Immigrant Chooses a New Name
POV: Ur an 1890s Eastern European Immigrant and you are choosing your new name The angelicized version of your actual name OR “John”
A person sits thoughtfully on a couch while choosing between an anglicized version of their real Eastern European name and the generic name “John.” The joke pokes fun at immigrants changing their names to fit into English-speaking society, often reducing a distinctive name to the most stereotypically American option.
