Fun fact, this wire around the city is actually for the Jewish community. This 80-mile fishing line is a symbolic fenced-in boundary. On Saturday, Jews aren't allowed to carry anything outside from their homes and into the public. This wire symbolically extends the private residence into the public space. This helps with daily tasks like talking on your cell phone or taking your kid to the park. This concept was invented over 2,000 years ago and almost every major city in the world utilizes it, although New York's is easily the most extensive. This wire is mad thin and almost invisible if you're not looking for it directly. The rules say it needs to be over 15 feet tall, although this is way over 15 feet, and no more than a quarter inch thick. It runs from 126th straight up in Harlem to Battery Pond, and then back up along the East River. Additionally the wire costs about $150,000 a year to maintain and paid for by the Orthodox Synagogues of New York. It's pretty cool, I've never noticed it before. Curious if any of you ever knew about this.
