The Simple Things in Life
It’s the simple things in life that bring us the most joy. You’re onboard the Nozomi Express Shinkansen. The train just flew past Mount Fuji at 200mph. The salaryman across the aisle has cracked open his second can of Asahi and you’re about to devour the meal deal you picked up at the station. And no one is playing music out loud on their phone.
A screenshot shows a social media post describing an idealized ride on Japan’s Nozomi Express Shinkansen: Mount Fuji rushes past, a salaryman drinks Asahi, a station meal is ready, and nobody plays music aloud. The joke is sarcastic, exaggerating stereotypical travel pleasures and relief from annoying passenger behavior while presenting them as “the simple things” that bring joy.
