Chimpanzee Comfort After Defeat
An adult male chimpanzee, defeated in a fight with a rival, screams while being comforted by a juvenile with an embrace. Such ‘consolations’ have as yet not been reported for other animals. The behavior seems a form of empathy without tangi- ble benefit to the performer.
An adult male chimpanzee screams after losing a fight while a juvenile embraces and comforts him. The joke is the mock-scientific claim that this shows empathy without any tangible benefit, presented as if animal behavior were being formally documented.
