Ancient Socrates Quote Formatting
On the earliest papyrus recordings of Plato’s dialogue with the mathematician Theaetetus, quotes from Socrates are indicated by “>” to the left of each quotation.
A humorous fake scholarly note claims that ancient papyri marked every quotation from Socrates with the modern internet quote symbol “>”. The joke combines classical philosophy with contemporary social-media formatting, making it a reaction to pedantic explanations or unexpectedly ancient versions of modern conventions.
