Radar Cross Section Comparison
RADAR CROSS SECTION Radar cross-section (RCS) is a measure of how detectable an object is by radar. An aircraft’s RCS depends on its physical shape, materials, antennae, and other sensors. Onboard sensors can also play a role in determining RCS as materials and design. Insect 0.001 m² Bird 0.01 m² F-117 0.003 m² F-35 0.005 m² B-2 0.75-0.05 m² F-16 4.0 m² Source: The B-2 at 30: Improving with Age, Air Force Magazine, July-August 2019, Vol. 102, No. 07. <http://www.airforcemag.com>
An infographic compares the radar cross-sections of an insect, bird, stealth aircraft, bomber, and fighter jet. The joke is the exaggerated contrast between highly stealthy aircraft and the much larger radar signature of the F-16, making it useful as a reaction to someone or something being extremely detectable.
