Portugal Then and Now
Portugal in the 16th century "I have established colonies and trading routes in America, Africa and Asia." Portugal today Select language: -Portuguese 🇧🇷
A muscular Doge wearing a historical hat stands beside the Portuguese flag, representing Portugal’s powerful colonial empire in the 16th century. A smaller, ordinary Doge sits beside the modern Portuguese flag and asks to select Portuguese, with a Brazilian flag emoji. The joke contrasts Portugal’s former global influence with a stereotypically limited modern association with the Portuguese language.
