Judith Butler Explains Gender Performativity
I'm talking about a “grid of cultural intelligibility”, where sex, gender and desire are maintained under a heterosexual binary (i.e. coherent pattern of sex → gender → oppositional desire) Like the grid in Tron? Well... In this grid, “coherence” and “continuity” of sex, gender and desire are the “norms of intelligibility” And as this pattern is repeated, we come to see it as natural. Remember the concealing? This is gender performativity: “anticipation”, “repetition” and “ritual”. Gender is a doing not a being So with gender I just rinse, lather, repeat. Woah, watch where you put the “there” buddy - there is no odor behind the deed. Ok, what?! Gender is “performative” in that it is productive. Identity is an effect (a product) rather than a cause. “It is neither fatally determined nor fully artificial and arbitrary”. It is not theatrical. But if you don’t mean performativity as theatrical, do you use the example of drag in chapter 3? I simply used drag as a parodic example of gender identity - a “parody” of “the very notion of an ‘original’”. I don’t prescribe it as a subversive tactic. I'm at a loss JB. Can we ever overcome this hegemony you describe? We can't overcome. BUT what I have described is inherently open to transformation “Gender ‘reality’ … might be made differently and, indeed, less violently” “I continue to hope for a coalition of sexual minorities that will transcend the simple categories of identity—that will counter and dissipate the violence imposed by restrictive bodily norms” AWESOME!
A comic-style collage presents Judith Butler discussing gender performativity, intercut with confused and enthusiastic cats. The joke comes from turning dense academic theory about gender, identity, and social norms into an absurd dialogue with cat reactions and a reference to Tron. It is used as a humorous reaction to complicated theory or an unexpectedly dramatic intellectual explanation.
