Formal Essays Are Never Happy

Text on the meme

formal essays are never happy.

What it means

A handwritten note on a formal essay says “formal essays are never happy,” with a sad face crossed out beside it. The joke personifies formal writing as inherently gloomy and uses a student’s marginal comment as a relatable reaction to academic essays.
