The Patch Paper Tape Fix
The "Patch" Small corrections to the programmed sequence could be done by patching over portions of the paper tape and re-punching the holes in that section.
A close-up photograph shows a long strip of punched paper tape covered with holes, handwritten red markings, and taped-over sections. The caption explains that programmers corrected small errors by patching the tape and re-punching the holes, making the joke about an extremely literal and painstaking version of a software patch. It is shared as a reaction to old-school debugging, fragile technology, or making a quick fix to a complicated problem.
