Tiny Cat Survives the Apocalypse

12:15 PM 1/2/91

A sequence of surreal cat clips moves from a kitten in a shopping mall to a black cat wandering through the same kind of space, then a tiny white kitten stands calmly as explosions erupt around it. The absurd contrast between the innocent, expressionless kitten and the escalating destruction makes it a reaction for staying unfazed during total chaos. Mitski’s indie-rock song “Dan the Dancer” gives the montage a strangely dramatic, melancholic mood, making the explosions feel comically overdramatic.
