The Aral Sea Industrial Catastrophe
The Aral Sea in 1957: Fishing Industry Soviet Irrigation Projects: Cotton Farmers Fish & Wildlife: Fertilizer Pesticides Salinity Uzbek SSR Largest Cotton Exporter 1988 The Aral Sea Today: Environmental Collapse + Pollution +End of Traditional Coastal Lifestyles
A fast-paced animated meme shows the Aral Sea changing from a thriving 1957 fishing region into a devastated landscape after Soviet irrigation projects, cotton farming, fertilizer, pesticides, and salinity. Cats humorously represent the fishing industry, cotton farmers, wildlife, and the Uzbek SSR, before a crying banana-cat symbolizes the environmental collapse and loss of traditional coastal lifestyles. The dramatic contrast between the absurd cat imagery and the serious ecological disaster is set to The Living Tombstone’s “My Ordinary Life,” whose energetic electropop mood makes the historical tragedy feel theatrically ironic and meme-worthy.
